Operation Endgame is an international law enforcement initiative targeting cybercrime, resulting in the dismantling of several major botnets and the arrest of multiple suspects. The operation, which continues to unfold, aims to disrupt the infrastructure used by cybercriminals and mitigate the financial impact on victims, estimated to be in the hundreds of millions of euros. According to Infosecurity Magazine, the action between 27 and 29 May hit the droppers IcedID, SystemBC, Pikabot, Smokeloader, Bumblebee and Trickbot, took down over 100 servers, put more than 2,000 domains under police control and led to four arrests, one in Armenia and three in Ukraine. Intel 471 explains why loaders make such a good target: they are often the first foothold that initial access brokers resell to ransomware groups. Its analysts still saw SmokeLoader and SystemBC activity after the takedown and expect replacement services to fill the gap, so the endgame may need a few more rounds.
