Matrix 2.0 moves login to OIDC and calls into the protocol

··1 min

Matrix.org Foundation announced the release of Matrix 2.0, built on four key enhancements. Simplified Sliding Sync (MSC4186) makes login and sync near-instant and runs natively in Synapse since 1.114, so the separate Sliding Sync Proxy is on its way out. Native OIDC (MSC3861) hands login to an OAuth 2.0/OpenID Connect provider, so your password only ever reaches the auth server. MatrixRTC (MSC4143) brings end-to-end encrypted group voice and video calls into Matrix itself instead of leaning on Jitsi. Invisible Encryption (MSC4153) starts by excluding devices that are not cross-signed from getting room keys. All four proposals have since been accepted, MatrixRTC only in October 2026, so “here” took a while.

As for client software, currently only Element X supports Matrix 2.0. Element’s launch post makes Element X the mobile app most Element users should now use, and notes that a login you cannot verify from another session or with your recovery key means resetting encryption, which deletes the server-side key backup. So keep that recovery key somewhere you will actually find it.
