QR code fraud via fake parking tickets and a milk tea survey

··1 min

On Reddit a user posted his fake parking ticket in San Francisco. Its QR code led to a copycat of the SFMTA payment site. SFMTA told The San Francisco Standard that its parking officers have instructions to remove and report any false tickets, and that drivers should check citations on its official lookup page. BleepingComputer picked up on the story. This article contains the actually baffling details of a Singapore-based woman losing a lot of money for scanning a malicious QR code. The victim installed an app on her phone to fill out a survey for a free cup of milk tea. According to Cyber Daily, the app requested Android’s Accessibility Service, harvested her banking credentials and moved the money out of her account overnight. Free bubble tea has rarely been this expensive.
