nebty has mapped DoppelCart, a fake-shop network of roughly 119,000 domains (2.72 percent of the entire .shop inventory they examined), which clones legitimate retailers wholesale, right down to authentic product descriptions, images, and the real shop’s customer-support contact details.
The consequence is that defrauded buyers complain to the genuine business, which now fields support tickets for orders it never took.
Spotted through patterns during routine client work and then confirmed against public website scans, it comfortably outsizes the previously documented BogusBazaar cluster of 75,000-plus domains, making it, by nebty’s own reckoning, the largest publicly documented fake-shop network by domain count.
For scale, SRLabs counted about 22,500 BogusBazaar shops active in April 2024 and more than 850,000 victims, mostly in Western Europe and the US.
Somebody registered a hundred and nineteen thousand .shop domains and the registry apparently found nothing remarkable about that.
