According to the BKA cybercrime report, cybercrime in Germany reached a new high in 2024 with 131,391 domestic cases and 201,877 committed from abroad or from an unknown location. Reported ransomware attacks actually fell slightly, from 1,018 in 2023 to 950, while hacktivist DDoS attacks kept rising with geopolitical tensions and smishing stood out among phishing campaigns. The report expects AI to make phishing more convincing, describes an increasingly professional “Cybercrime-as-a-Service” economy, and points to a sharp rise in internationally coordinated takedowns such as the BKA-led Operation Endgame. The €178.6 billion damage estimate it cites comes from Bitkom’s Wirtschaftsschutz 2024 survey, where cyberattacks make up 67% of the €266.6 billion total damage to German companies and 70% of affected firms attribute attacks to organized crime. With a clearance rate of 32% for domestic cases, the odds still favour the other side.
