A faulty plugin update from Tenable knocked Nessus agents offline at organizations across the Americas, Europe and Asia. Tenable’s incident report first flagged agents going offline after plugin updates on December 31, 2024, and paused the plugin feed the same evening. According to the Nessus Agent 10.8.2 release notes, a differential plugin update made agent versions 10.8.0 and 10.8.1 compile mutually dependent libraries at the same time, which took the agents down. Tenable disabled both versions and shipped 10.8.2 on January 2, but the agents do not recover on their own: admins have to upgrade to 10.8.2 or downgrade to 10.7.3, and anyone upgrading through agent profiles also needs a separate plugin reset. Your vulnerability scanner should find outages, not cause them.
